Rupee Weakens vs. the US Currency; BSE Sensex Ascends

January 09
12:58 2014

rup1New Delhi, Thursday, January 9 – The currency of India on Thursday deteriorated by 17 paise to 62.24 in opposition to the US currency in the early hours trading at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market as a result of requirement for the US dollar from importers.

Over and above the augments of dollar in opposition to further currencies abroad, improved demand from importers for the dollar also kept pressure on the Indian currency, the Forex dealers stated.

On the other hand, an elevated opening of the domestic equity market capped the plunge. In the midst of a modest upturn in local stocks, the domestic unit had increased by 23 paise to one-week peak of 62.07 in opposition to the greenback on Wednesday. In the intervening time, during the morning trade on January 9, the benchmark BSE Sensex climbed up by 42.10 points, or 0.20 %, to 20,771.48.
